Unlocking Nature’s Healing: The Medical Benefits of Cannabis

Cannabis has been used for its healing properties for millennia.  The first documented case dates back to 2800 BC.

The botanical contains more than 100 different chemicals called cannabinoids.  The word cannabinoid refers to every chemical substance, regardless of structure or origin, that joins the cannabinoid receptors of the body and brain and that have similar effects to those produced by the Cannabis Sativa plant.

Research has found that the cannabis plant produces between 80 and 100 cannabinoids and about 300 non-cannabinoid chemicals.  Each one has unique effects on the body.  Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are the main chemicals used in medicines.

The greatest amount of evidence for the therapeutic effects of cannabis relate to its ability to reduce chronic pain, nausea and vomiting due to chemotherapy, and spasticity or stiff muscles from MS.

What is Cannabis?

Medical cannabis is a plant-based medicine from the cannabis sativa or indica species.  The cannabis plant has two major active compounds; THC, and CBD.  The two main cannabinoids are Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the psychoactive chemical that produces a high, and Cannabidiol (CBD) is reduces some of the negative effects that people can experience such as anxiety.  There are more than 100 types of natural chemical components called cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant.   And there is some very promising research ongoing to discover more unknown benefits of the plant.

The cannabis flowers contain the most cannabinoids and have the most therapeutic potential.  Medical Cannabis is used to relieve serious and chronic conditions such as pain, nausea, muscle spasms, anxiety, multiple sclerosis, low appetite, sleep problems, autism, epilepsy (seizure disorders), and other conditions.
